The production of industrial goods such as chemicals, metals, paper and oil and gas today requires very little human intervention. If you visit an industrial production site, for example the coal gasification plant at Sasol, you won?t see very many people around. The reason is that today?s production is automated by using control systems and industrial software technology that interacts with the process. The processes can be operated from a central control room at the site or even from an office located somewhere else. Industrial automation software trades under many names, each often associated with a different industry: process automation systems (PAS), supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA), process control systems (PCS) or distributed control system (DCS). The aim is running the process efficiently and safely. Current research furthers the development of this software and involves engineering, security, enterprise connectivity, advanced process control, plant asset management, energy efficiency, and alarm management ? in short, improved production management.
